چکیده

In the last few years, the growth of l-day surgery and the introduction of new techniques have increased the need for general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. The end point of l-day anesthesia is early patient discharge home. Therefore, new muscle relaxant agents have been propounded to anesthetists to achieve this. In this paper, we analyze pharmacological and clinical characteristics of available newer muscle relaxants and evaluate their possible use in l-day surgery.

Comparison of Two Different Induction Doses of Atracurium in Myasthenia Gravis in Patients Undergoing Thymectomy

Introduction:yasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder resulting from a decreased number of active acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction. Thymectomy is one of its current treatments. Due to sensitivity of myasthenic patients to non-depolarizing muscle relaxants and also the interaction of this medication with anti-cholinestrase drugs, determining the dosage of non-depolarizing ...

In search of a reliable awareness monitor.

T he term anesthesia originally meant " the state in which a patient is insensible to the trauma of surgery. " Although, the science of anesthesiol-ogy has advanced rapidly, defining, measuring, and understanding depth of anesthesia has moved ahead slowly. Indeed, we are yet to define properly the phenomenon that we use in our everyday practice to render patients insensitive to the trauma of su...

– Pharmacology of Muscle Relaxants and Their Antagonists

In 1942 Griffith and Johnson suggested that d-tubocurarine (dTc) is a safe drug to use during surgery to provide skeletal muscle relaxation. One year later, Cullen described its use in 131 patients who had received general anesthesia for their surgery. In 1954, Beecher and Todd reported a sixfold increase in mortality in patients receiving dTc versus those who had not received a relaxant. The i...

Bradycardia, hypotension and bronchospasm following remifentanil-propofol in a myathenic paitent treated by pyridostigmine--a case report.

Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder of skeletal muscles due to the presence of acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Myasthenic patients are resistant to depolarizing relaxants such as succinylcholine but are very sensitive to non-depolarizing muscle relaxants1. That’s why, narcotic-based technique for induction and maintenance of anesthesia without muscle relaxants has been ...

Effects of atracurium and pancuronium on the oculocardiac reflex in children.

The authors compare the effect of two muscle relaxants, atracurium and pancuronium, on the bradycardia resulting from the oculocardiac reflex during eye surgery for strabismus in children. Two groups, each composed of 15 children, received either pancuronium or atracurium during strabismus operations. Heart rate and rhythm were observed at several points during the operations, and the changes t...
